The Crowning Glory of Payyannur

This great temple is jewel in the crown of Payyannur, Kannur, Kerala. A vast compound wall is the first attraction. A beautiful and large temple pond in its pristine glory follows then. The pond has plenty of fish of a foot and more long in size willing to rub your feet if entered in the water hoping to get some puffed rice feed. Surrounding areas are clean and green with space to walk and enjoy the breeze emanating from the divine grace of Lord Murugan.

Within the compound wall are the administrative offices. Another compound wall called "Naalambalam" is adorned by the hanging lamps all around a specialty of this temple. It would be a visual treat when lighted fully for the devotees. Normally it will be on festival season. The entrance of the inner wall is another divine work og architecture. The Sri kovil ( Sanctum Sanctorum) is in circular shape. The traditional music from conch, maddalam , idakka etc and the shine of traditional lamps keep the devotees concentration on the Subramanya Swamy. The majestic idol glowing and radiating the divine grace will bless the devotees praying him. The idol is carved out of special black stone. Lord is not in the form of Balamurugan  but in the form of a Warrior after winning the demons.

Samaaraadhana pooja is a festival season here. This is during the Malayalam month Vrichikam 1st to 16th ( November second half ). It is believed that those who pray here during the araadhana period will be cured of all ills.Skandashashti also is an important event here. Crowd will be unbearable during festival days.
