There was a king. King Croesus, the King of Lydia. He was the wealthiest ruler of his time.Solon, a Greek legislator famed for his knowledge and wisdom was a contemporary of Croesus.
King Croesus invited Solon to his court and tries to impress him with its grandeur and opulence. But Solon was indifferent. Not only disinterested but also warns Croesus not to take his good fortune for granted. It could at any time take a turn for the worse.
Many years later, Croesus was defeated in a battle against Cyrus, the ruler of Persia. He was about to be put to death. At the gallows King Croesus recalled Solon’s warnings and shouts: “Solon, you were right ! you were right !”
Cyrus heard the utterances of Croesus.This reference to Lady Luck’s inconstancy caused the bewildered Persian Ruler to dwell on his own vulnerability. He immediately grants King Croesus reprieve from death.
The story demonstrates the the role that luck plays in one’s life. It is not to say that success can be attributed entirely to luck. However, one should accept that luck plays a greater part in events than most of us give it credit for. Often people attribute a positive outcome to their own efficient work and actions. In reality it may have been produced purely by chance. A person who is successful may turn arrogant enough to think that his success was purely owing to his own merits and skills. But one has only to look around to find that many people who are equally meritorious have not enjoyed an equal measure of success. Clearly, LUCK does play some part.
