Raksha Bandhan

Today is Raksha Bandhan day!

The full moon day in the month of Chingam - that is  Shravan Poornima in North India, according to the Hindu calendar is celebrated as the Raksha Bandhan day. A day for sisters to get that vow of life long protection, from their brothers. By tying a  rakhi (sacred thread) on the wrists of their brothers sisters show their love.

There are several legends about this auspicious day that celebrates the bond between a brothers and sisters. One of such event in history that cemented the belief in the festival is here!

Alexander the Great's wife Roxana and King Porus
Legend has it that during Alexander the Great's invasion of India in 326 BCE, his wife Roxana sent a sacred thread to Porus, requesting him not to harm her husband in battle. It's believed that on the battlefield, the thread on his wrist was a constant reminder of his promise to Roxana, preventing him from attacking Alexander directly.

Indra and Indrani
During a war between Gods and demons, wherein Indra was losing to King Bali, Indra's wife Indrani prayed to Lord Vishnu, who gave her a holy thread which she tied around Indra's wrist. Blessed with its powers, Indra won the war and the thread became his protection against any evil.

Krishna and Draupadi
It's said that after Lord Krishna hurt his index finger while hurling the Sudharshan Chakra at Shishupala, Draupadi tore her saree immediately and tied it around Krishna's finger to prevent it from bleeding. Touched by her unconditional love, Krishna took the mantle of Draupadi's care and protection upon himself.

Queen Kunti and Abhimanyu
Queen Kunti is said to have tied a sacred thread as a measure of protection, on the wrist of her grandson, Abhimanyu--the son of Subhadra and Arjun--during the battle of Mahabharata.

King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi
In a turn of events that led Lord Vishnu disguising himself as the doorman of King Bali. Bali is the grandson of Vishnu's ardent devotee Prahlada. In the absence of Vishnu there in Vaikuntam  the Head Quarters,  Goddess Lakshmi became restless. She came to earth in the guise of a Brahmin woman and told Bali, the story of her husband having gone away for some work, due to which she requested for shelter from the King. Bali not only gave her a place to stay, but also took care of her. It's said that on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravana month, she tied a thread around Bali's wrist with prayers for his protection and happiness. Touched by her affection, Bali granted her a wish. She requested him to free her husband, the gatekeeper. The incident had Bali confused as he couldn't envision the lady as the doorman's wife. It's then that both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi revealed their true selves to the King, who urged Vishnu to return with the Goddess to Vaikuntam.

Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun
Rani Karnavati--the widowed queen of Chittor--is said to have sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, upon the looming threat of invasion from the Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah. Though Humayun turned up too late, it's no secret that he honored the sentiment with which it was sent.

Pilgrimage ! For What?

One day, all the disciples went to their master and said,
"Master, Master, we all are going on a pilgrimage!"

Master: "Why you want to go on a pilgrimage trip?"

Disciples: "So that we can improve our devotion."

Master: "OK got it. Then do me a small favour. I will give a couple bitter gourds to you. Take it   along with you. Ensure that the gourds I gave you are placed in the altar of the Temple Deity for obtaining the blessings and bring it back to me.

The ardent disciples carried out the master's instruction truthfully. The pilgrimage went on well, They visited temple after temple and finally they came back and presented the bitter gourds to the Master with great reverence.

Master asked them to cook it and serve it to all.

The disciples cooked it and served it to the master and others.

After having the first bite, the master said,

"Surprising...!"

Disciples: "What's so surprising Master?"

Master: "Even after such a long pilgrimage the taste of gourd is still bitter.
Why?"

Disciples: "But isn't it the very nature of the bitter gourd, Master?"

Master: "That's what I am saying. Unless you change your nature, any number of pilgrimage will not make any difference. So, if we do not change ourselves no teacher or guru can make a difference in our lives!"

Therefore, Master continued,
"if f you think positively,
Sound becomes music,
Movement become dance,
Smile becomes laughter,
Mind becomes meditative and
Life becomes a celebration !"

Thiruppathi Temple Gold - a report

The management of Tirupati Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh has said it will look for banks that offer highest interest rates for its gold available for investment.

The investment committee chaired by Executive Officer D. Sambasiva Rao on Wednesday reviewed the investments made in banks, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) said in a statement.

Expressing satisfaction at the interest rate at which the temple made its investments in banks, the committee called for exploring investments for a period of one year or three years with banks that quote the highest rate of interest for the gold which is readily available for investment.

The committee also discussed as to how companies can participate in various services of the TTD under corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, the statement said.

The TTD said in April that it deposited 1,311 kg of gold with Punjab National Bank (PNB) under the Gold Monetisation Scheme and is negotiating for better terms for making more such bank deposits.

The TTD manages the Balaji or Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. It is believed to be the richest temple in the world, with annual offerings from devotees worth hundreds of crores of rupees.

The deposit with the PNB was made under the three-year short-term Gold Monetisation Scheme. PNB was chosen because it quoted the higest interest rate at 1.75 per cent per annum.

The short-term scheme has the advantage that the deposit can be redeemed in gold which temples like Tirupati favour.

The TTD has requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the central government that deposits under medium- and long-term schemes of the Gold Monetisation Scheme should also be redeemable in gold so that depositor-temples get more attractive returns.

The temple receives offerings from devotees in cash, jewellery, gold, silver, other precious metals, gems, property deeds and demat share transfers.

"Gold offering will be around one tonne per year. In the case of property deeds, due procedure is followed by the concerned department to transfer the title. The temple also gets silver, diamond and other items," a TTD official told IANS earlier.

According to the TTD official, the revenue this year is likely to be about Rs 2,600 crore, of which the devotees' offerings in hundi is estimated at around Rs 1,000 crore.

The interest receipts are likely to be around Rs 800 crore and the revenue from sales of tickets, prasadam and others is estimated to be around Rs 600 crore.

The proceeds from auctioning of human hair offered by devotees to Lord Venkateswara were expected to be about Rs 140 crore, the official said.

The major outgo will be towards wages and salaries, estimated at around Rs 500 crore this year.

Seek Forgiveness

There may be a time when your Jain colleagues, friends or neighbors come to you and say “Micchami Dukkadam” (seek forgiveness) with joined hands. You must have wondered what does this mean and why is he/she saying it to me?

On the final day of Paryushan is Samvastsari Pratikraman (ritual for washing away sins). Jains seek forgiveness from all the creatures whom they may have harmed knowingly or unknowingly by uttering the phrase— Micchami Dukkadam. It means "If I have caused you offence in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, in thought, word or deed, then I seek your forgiveness". No private quarrel or dispute may be carried beyond Samvatsari, and traditionally, letters have been sent and telephone calls made to friends and relatives asking their forgiveness.

Svetambara and Digambara are two major sects of Jain religion. Shvetambars observe the ritual over 8 days and Digambars over 10 days. It takes place during the monsoon season (Chaturmas), when travelling barefoot is difficult for Jain monks and nuns; so they make themselves available to the community for instruction and guidance.

The purpose of Paryushan is to stay close to your soul, reflect on your shortcomings, seek forgiveness for wrong doings, remove internal corruption and vow to minimise mistakes. Daily meditation and prayers help one to look within and reflect on the teachings of the Tirthankaras for guidance. On the fourth day of Paryushan, it is customary to read from the Kalpasutra, a scripture which recounts the life of Lord Mahavira, the last Tirthankara. It recounts the story of his birth, life and liberation and details of the lives of other Tirthankaras and the rules of Paryushan.

Jain devotees often take time off from work during Paryushan and observe penance. Their vegetarian meals are made simpler than usual. Professionals observe fast for at least one day while those who can, do the same for all eight days.

Tiger Balm's unique formulation dates back to the ancient days of Chinese emperors when Aw Chu Kin, a Chinese Imperial Court herbalist created a balm made with herbal ingredients which have proven to be safe and effective. He left China with the recipe and made for Rangoon in the late 1870s, where he made and sold his special ointment. Years later, his two sons took the business to Singapore and successfully sold their ointment to surrounding countries like Malaya, Hong Kong, Batavia, Siam and various cities in China.
